STATE LEGISLATION
Animal Protection Voters is dedicated to the passage of stronger animal protection laws for all of New Mexico. Although our state legislature is only in session for a short time each year, we work year round to ensure that a strong voice for the animals is heard at the state capitol.
2005 LEGISLATIVE SESSION:
The New Mexico Legislature convenes on January 18h for a 60-day session. APV has identified four priority issues. In addition, there are a number of other animal protection bills that we will be working on. Please support these efforts by contacting your legislators today and requesting their support.

CURRENT BILLS:
 |
Cockfighting Ban
APV aims for New Mexico to become the 49th state to outlaw knife fights between chickens in 2005, the Chinese Year of the Rooster. Cockfighting is a bloody spectacle that leaves a blemish on the entire state. |
 |
Animal Sheltering Services Act This bill creates a new statewide board that would ensure humane treatment of animals at our public animal shelters. |
 |
Antifreeze Safety
Often called Scooby’s Law, this bill requires usually sweet antifreeze to contain a bittering agent, thus protecting dogs, wildlife and children from accidental and intentional poisoning. |
 |
Dissection Alternatives & Student Choice This effort would guarantee student choice, allowing those in public schools, K-12, who object to specimen dissection to learn via an alternative mode of study, such as virtual dissection. |
 |
Dangerous Dogs
As a result of an unfortunate number of dog attacks, legislation will be introduced to protect the safety of both people and animals. APV supports a proactive approach that holds people responsible for the actions of their dogs. |
 |
Horse Slaughter and other Horse Protection Bills
This measure would prohibit horses from being sold for human consumption and mirrors federal legislation that has been pending too long for New Mexico horse advocates. |
 |
8 Things You Can Do To Build Political Capital For Animals
|
| |
Bad Bills
These bills would all have negative impacts on animals and are opposed by Animal Protection Voters
