Congressmen Luján and Heinrich
Cosponsors of Federal Legislation
to Help Save Chimps and Tax Dollars

Call Congress Now to Help New Mexico’s Chimps

Thanks to our elected leaders working
to save chimps and tax dollars!
Today the House and Senate introduced the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, and New Mexico’s Congressmen Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich signed on as original cosponsors in the House.

The bill seeks to end government support for invasive chimp research and release government owned chimpanzees (including the Alamogordo Primate Facility chimps) into sanctuary care. Proposed changes are estimated to save taxpayers $25 million per year.

FIRST:
Thank your Congressman if you live in New Mexico’s 1st or 3rd congressional district (click here for a map to check)

 - Call Rep Ben Ray Luján (serves CD3: Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Farmington, Clovis and more) at (202) 225-6190
- Call Rep Martin Heinrich (serves CD1: Albuquerque, Bernalillo, South Valley and more) at (202) 225-6316

Sample script: “Hello, my name is ________ and I live in _________, can you please pass along a message to my Representative? Please thank Congressman _________ for signing on to the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act as an original cosponsor. I am a voter and I value the Congressman’s compassion for animals and his support for prudent spending of tax dollars, thank you again!”

SECOND:
Please take 5 minutes to ask your entire federal delegation to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act.
Call both: Senator Tom Udall at 202-224-6621
              Senator Jeff Bingaman at 202-224-5521

Call your Representative Steve Pearce if you live in the 2nd congressional district (Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Silver City, Hobbs and more) at 202-225-2365.

Sample script: “Hello, my name is _________ I am a constituent from ________. Please ask my congressman _______ to cosponsor the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. This act would save taxpayers an estimated $25 million per year and would spare chimpanzees, who have already spent long and difficult years in labs, further suffering.”

Not a New Mexican?
Use the same script, but look up your legislators with Contacting the Congress.

Study and More News
The National Academy of Sciences study on chimp research requested in December by Senators Tom Udall, Jeff Bingaman and Tom Harkin is now coming together. You can sign up for the chimp research listserv online to comment directly to policymakers. Animal Protection of New Mexico will work to keep you informed as the study progresses.

CNN’s Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell continues to cover the Alamogordo Primate Facility chimpanzees, increasing the number of citizens asking the National Institutes of Health to retire the chimps.

After APNM’s Laura Bonar appeared earlier this year we sent Jane Velez-Mitchell a thank you and chimp tag, and Jane pledged on her show to wear the tag until chimps in U.S. laboratories are safe. This April, another segment about 14 chimpanzees recently shipped to Texas for use in further invasive research aired with actress Kristen Bauer.

Our limited supply of chimp tags is running low, order yours now and support efforts to Retire The Chimps. Thank you everyone for your support!
