Breed Specific Law Looms
Help Animal Champions Win Elections!
Animal Protection Voters has learned that during the upcoming 30-day legislative session, Senator Sue Wilson Beffort plans to introduce legislation that would impact many New Mexicans (you may have read about the bill here or here). Senator Wilson Beffort proposes to amend the state’s Dangerous Dog Act by specifically targeting so-called "pit-bulls" as dangerous dogs. The bill would also add new registration requirements and responsibilities for dog owners and amend sections related to the seizure of dogs.

Speak up for dogs and families
threatened by proposed legislation!

Animal Protection Voters and many others oppose this legislation for a number of good reasons.
We ask you to join us in writing letters to Governor Susana Martinez, to your New Mexico Senator, and to your New Mexico Representative to prevent this breed-specific legislation from being heard in 2012. Please see these links for contact information for Governor Martinez and to look up contact information for your New Mexico Senator and New Mexico Representative.
Craft your own polite, encouraging letters using these points:
- Senator Sue Wilson Beffort’s proposed breed-specific bill will not help keep the public safe. Please stop this bill from being introduced in 2012.
- Any type of dog has the potential to bite; the predominant root causes of dog attacks or bite incidents are neglect, cruel abuse and abandonment.
- Constituents support elected leaders who work to reduce dog bite incidents and attacks by:
a.Supporting agency training and communication for the timely reporting and effective investigation of animal cruelty cases; and
b. Voting for stronger animal cruelty laws and meaningful spay-neuter funding – these measures address the major root causes of dog attacks or bites, and protect animals and our entire community.
- The proposed bill will only create a new set of problems, beginning with the fact that it is virtually impossible to identify and articulate what is a “pit bull.” Thank you for your urgent attention to the proposed bill.

The many innocent animals currently under threat underscore an important fact: 2012 will be a big election year for animals. Statewide redistricting and important Congressional races mean that next November, elections will have long-lasting consequences for animals.
Thank you for all the time, love, and care you give to the animals in your life. Animals desperately need something else from you: your participation in the political process.
Whatever your talents, even if you are available to volunteer for one day only, please contact APV now! Together we can make a huge impact by supporting bona fide champions for animals, but we must start now.
