APNM/APV Internships
Thank you for your interest in Animal
Protection of New Mexico (APNM)/Animal Protection
Voters’ (APV) Intern Program. The program
is designed to put people directly in touch with
the inner workings of the animal rights movement
and the way in which APNM and APV operate every
day.
APNM is New Mexico's largest statewide animal rights
organization. Working in conjunction with APNM,
APV is New Mexico’s only organization dedicated
to passing animal protection legislation. These
two organizations focus their efforts on changing
the institutions that contribute to so much animal
suffering. APNM concentrates on public policy and
education, and APV concentrates on legislation.
Please refer to the APNM
and APV websites.
Following are some of the areas in which interns
may spend some or all of their time during their
internship:
CAMPAIGN RESEARCH
APNM and APV are involved in investigating and exposing
a variety of cruel activities in New Mexico. Campaigns
require meticulous library and on-line research,
field investigations, legal research, photography/videography,
documentation, media work and hundreds of other
behind-the-scenes tasks to inform the public of
animal abuse.
OUTREACH AND EDUCATION
A crucial goal of both organizations is to prevent
animal abuse before it ever happens. Outreach and
educational programs can reach into communities
through fairs, classrooms, street theatre, demonstrations,
etc. to teach people how to live cruelty-free lives.
OTHER
As nonprofit animal protection organizations, APNM
and APV have their share of administrative and clerical
work too. Interns might also be asked to perform
tasks such as data entry and preparation of mailings,
or to work on special projects.
Interns also attend a new employee orientation session
and meet regularly with a staff member to discuss
their work and any problems.
Overall, working with APNM and APV can be very exciting,
but very demanding as well. Interns are considered
part of the APNM/APV staff and, as such, must be
flexible and able to switch from one project to
another as necessary. We depend a great deal on
our interns and appreciate their patience and hard
work. In turn, we are confident that our intern
program is a beneficial and effective animal movement
experience.
APNM/APV internships are performed on a volunteer
basis. Interns receive no pay for their work, but
they are eligible for a stipend of up to $50 per
week for transportation and food, if needed. Since
intern housing is not available, interns must provide
their own housing.
To be considered for an internship with APNM/APV,
please fill out an intern application. There are
no deadlines for internship applications. We receive
applications year-round and review them as they
arrive. We make a decision within two weeks of receiving
the application.
