What it does:  Amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to preserve the effectiveness of medically important antibiotics used in the treatment of human and animal diseases by phasing out certain non-therapeutic uses of antibiotics in livestock. An estimated 70% of antibiotics used in this country are fed to livestock for non-therapeutic purposes such as growth promotion and to compensate for overcrowded, unsanitary conditions on industrial farms.

NM co-sponsors: NONE

Latest News: S. 742 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; H.R. 2562 has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce
