Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act ~ SUPPORT ~

H.R. 2428, sponsored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY)

Link to H.R. 2428 http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.r.02428:

What it does: Provide protections for the last remaining wild and genetically pure herd of American Buffalo. The Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act would end years of seasonal hazing, capture and killing of bison (a.k.a. buffalo) in and around Yellowstone National Park by federal and state agencies until specific, common-sense conditions are met. Despite the scientific facts, the Montana Department of Livestock, the National Park Service, and other agencies continue to spend taxpayer dollars to haze and slaughter buffalo—this bill will put an end to these shameful management practices and ensure that our government agencies act as proper stewards for this great American wildlife icon. There has never been a confirmed incidence of brucellosis transmission in the wild from buffalo to cattle and the risk of such transmission is negligible. In fact, very few cattle are grazed adjacent to Yellowstone National Park, especially in winter and spring months when the bison are subjected to the draconian capture-test-slaughter operations. Since 2000, state and federal agencies have senselessly slaughtered more than 830 Yellowstone bison, members of America’s only continuously wild herd.
