What it does: Requires antifreeze and engine coolant contain a bittering agent to render it unpalatable and thereby provide a layer of protection for animals that may ingest and die from the poisonous liquid. A national version of New Mexico’s Scooby’s Law.

NM co-sponsors: Rep. Heather Wilson (district 1), Sen. Pete Domenici (R)

Latest News:

S. 1110 was heard by the Senate Committee on Science, Commerce, and Transportation, subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Product Safety and Insurance. NM State Rep. Kathy McCoy (R-Cedar Crest) testified for the bill.

S. 1139, sponsored by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) & H.R. 2669, sponsored by Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-PA) and Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA)

Link to H.R. 2669 http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.r.02669:

What it does: Amends the Animal Welfare Act to strengthen the ability of the Secretary of Agriculture to regulate the pet industry; extends animal welfare protections to address the sale of puppies and kittens over the Internet and through newspaper ads, closing a loophole that exempts those breeders as "pet stores." Many young kittens, puppies and other companion animals cross state lines and consumers have no opportunity to view the conditions the animals were bred in, which was the original intention of the Animal Welfare Act.

Latest News:

APV alert on PAWS--7/27/05

S. 1139 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; H.R. 2669 has been referred to the House Committee on Agriculture.

Pet Safety and Protection Act ~ FYI

S. 451, sponsored by Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI)

Link to http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:s.00451:

What it does: Prohibits Class B animal dealers (random source dealers) from selling dogs and cats to research laboratories and prevents stray animals from being sold into research. However, the bill does allow for the continuation of research on dogs and cats and does allow for animal shelters to turn over owner-relinquished animals to research facilities (but does not require pound seizure).

NM co-sponsors: NONE

Latest News:  S. 451 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.
