The Humane Society of the United States and
the Fund for Animals have recently released
their annual Humane Scorecard. The New Mexican
delegation received scores ranging from 78%
to 0%.
Congressman Tom Udall led
the way with 78%. While Udall never voted
against the animals, he is not a cosponsor
of the bill to strengthen federal animal fighting
laws and he did not sign a letter supporting
an increase in funding to enforce the current
laws addressing dog fighting and cockfighting,
although he did vote for the appropriation.
That animal fighting funding was one of Heather
Wilson’s only votes for the
animals, scored 22%. Steve Pearce
rated only 11%.
On the Senate side, Jeff Bingaman
scored 40%. He voted for the animals when
the opportunity presented itself, but took
no pro-active steps such as cosponsoring pro-animal
bills. Our senior senator, Pete Domenici,
on the other hand scored 0%.
