Cockfighting ban passes Senate by a vote of 31-11
After 5 1/2 hours of debate yesterday, SB10, the bill to ban cockfighting, passed the Senate in a historic vote of 33-11. Six adverse amendments were introduced by Senators Phil Griego (D-San Jose) and Rod Adair (R-Roswell) in an attempt to weaken the bill. The Senate approved two of the six amendments: 1) to decrease penalties to a petty misdemeanor for the first offense, a misdemeanor for the second offense and a fourth degree felony for the third and subsequent offenses; and 2) to remove all penalties for attending a cockfight.
The bill now goes to the House where it will receive committee referral.
