Bernalillo County Commission
Meeting Draws Large Attendance
Animal Advocates Speak Up for Their Friends!
A big THANK YOU to the excellent, eloquent, informed and diverse group of speakers who commented at last Wednesday’s Bernalillo County Commission meeting. A vote on the animal ordinance was deferred and tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday, December 9.
To view the meeting, please go to the GOV TV website and scroll down to the 11/12 Bernalillo Co Administrative Meeting.
Momentum is building for change in Bernalillo County, and now is the time to follow up with your county commissioner and emphasize that we need to protect all members of our community from abuse and neglect! You can look at this map to see which district you live in, or simply go to the Board of County Commissioner’s page where you can find commissioner contact information and a detailed map of each district.
Be sure to thank commissioners who stayed for public comment, and let all the policymakers know that the way animals are treated is a reflection of the community. Here are some specific talking points:
1) DRAMATIC REDUCATION IN SPACE REQUIREMENTS FOR HOBBY BREEDERS
Commissioners Archuleta and Córdova have both introduced amendments to remedy this problem. Read the amendments here.
2) CHAINING
The tether trolley ordinance has received an amendment as well. So many of you spoke from the head and the heart about this critical issue, let’s keep up the fight!
3) LIVESTOCK CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Do livestock deserve humane treatment? Of course they do, even animals raised for food deserve humane treatment. Urge the Commissioners to adopt the livestock care and maintenance wording of Doña Ana County’s animal ordinance so pigs don’t freeze to death in the winter and horses aren’t crippled from lack of hoof care.
4) SALE OF COMPANION ANIMALS AT PET SHOPS
Commissioners Brasher and Córdova have both introduced amendments on this topic. Reach out to other commissioners to ensure that puppy mills are not welcome in Bernalillo County!
5) PET OVERPOPULATION
Commissioners could help solve pet overpopulation by making intact animal permits mandatory for owners of unsterilized animals and increasing the funding for the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program.
6) MICROCHIPPING
A simple device that helps reunite owners with their lost pets, let’s make it mandatory for licensing within the County!
