The New Mexico Legislature is made up of 112 citizen legislators: 42 senators and 70 representatives. Senators serve 4 year terms, while representatives’ terms are only 2 years. Each New Mexican voter is represented by one senator and one representative.
The Legislature alternates between 30- and 60- day sessions. Short sessions, held in even years, are limited under the state constitution. Only bills fiscal in nature, bills that were vetoed the previous session and bills directly requested by the governor (often referred to as being on his “call”) are allowed to be introduced. Long sessions, held in odd years, are open to all legislation.
