State Legislation

 

Animal Protection Voters is dedicated to the passage of stronger animal protection laws for all of New Mexico. Although our state legislature is only in session for a short time each year, we work year round to ensure that a strong voice for the animals is heard at the state capitol.

2008 Legislation Summary & Results:

Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) - PASSED!

In 2008, the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office won an appropriation of $77,900 for ACT for: law enforcement education about animal cruelty; investigation and prevention of animal cruelty; apprehension and prosecution of violators.

 
 

Assistance with Bear-Proofing Communities - PASSED!

In 2008, $10,000 in capital outlay was appropriated for equipment and receptacles that lead to bear-proof communities.

 

 
 

Beaver Mitigation Equipment - Passed in Legislature, Vetoed by Governor

In 2008, $15,000 in capital outlay was appropriated by the legislature to purchase beaver mitigation equipment to address numerous complaints reported each year. This initiative was vetoed by Governor Richardson.

 

 
 

Community Animal Shelters &
Spay-Neuter Facilities - Received Funds

In 2008, $1,054,500 in capital outlay funds were obtained to improve conditions at several New Mexico animal shelters.

Purpose: For the purpose of funding animal shelter services, including a spay/neuter program, an animal transfer program and operational expenses, for an animal shelter in the city of Española in Rio Arriba County.

AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR ANIMAL SHELTER SERVICES IN THE CITY OF ESPANOLA IN RIO ARRIBA COUNTY. Seeking $30,000.

Purpose: For the purpose of funding animal shelter services, including a spay/neuter program, an animal transfer program and operational expenses, for an animal shelter in the city of Española in Rio Arriba County.

 
HB278 — Rio Arriba Animal Shelter Services
AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR ANIMAL SHELTERING AND OTHER SERVICES FOR ANIMALS IN RIO ARRIBA COUNTY. Seeking $25,000.
 
Purpose: To provide animal sheltering, spay and neutering and animal transfer services in Española and Rio Arriba County.
