New Mexico Catholic Church Supports Ban on Cockfighting

On Thursday, January 18, 2007, the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement to New Mexico State Senator Mary Jane Garcia in support of SB10, her bill to ban cockfighting in New Mexico. The statement included the following:

"The Bishops recognize that cockfighting is abusive of God's good creation and is not a cultural treasure. Cockfighting promotes violence."

Senator Garcia, thrilled by the Bishops' support, responded, "it seems appropriate that in a state whose patron is St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, the Church should take a stance against this cruelty. I am particularly pleased by their recognition that the so-called "cultural" argument is not valid."

SB10–Prohibit Cockfighting–was introduced on January 17, 2007, and assigned to the Conservation and Judiciary Committees.
