HOW NEW MEXICO VOTERS FEEL ABOUT COCKFIGHTING

Albuquerque Journal Poll, 2004
Animal Protection of New Mexico Poll, 2001

Albuquerque Journal Poll, 2004

66 % of Voters Support Cockfighting Ban

Recognizing the political importance of the cockfighting debate, The Albuquerque Journal included the issue when they polled voters on a number of key issues leading into the election home stretch. It was not surprising to find that two-thirds of those asked support legislation to ban cockfighting across the state. Less than a quarter of voters stated opposition, with 11 percent undecided.

Support for outlawing cockfighting was found across all demographics. Here’s a look at who favors banning the blood sport:

  • 70 % of Anglos
  • 59 % of Hispanics
  • 74 % of women
  • 57 % of men
  • 69 % of Republicans
  • 62 % of Democrats
  • 78 % of those between the ages of 50 and 64
  • 74 % of self-described liberals
  • 63 % of self-described conservatives
  • 58 % of self-described moderates
  • 68 % of those in the Albuquerque metropolitan area
  • 50 % of those on the state’s east side
  • 64 % of those in the south/southwestern part of the state
  • 82 % of those in the northwestern region

The Journal followed up the poll results with a stunning editorial titled ‘Cockfighting Ban High on Pecking Order.’ The paper found that the majority of favorable Hispanic responses to the poll “pecked a big hole” in the cultural defense of cockfighting. Additionally, it was noted that the 66 % favoring a cockfighting ban was higher than the 63 % favoring Governor Bill Richardson’s performance (another question on the same poll). Recalling a 2003 statement made by Governor Richardson in which he calls cockfighting “an unimportant issue that shouldn’t perturb a governor,” the Journal encourages the legislature and the Governor in particular to recognize cockfighting as a relevant issue to the state and to voters:

“In this election year, voters have a chance to pin down their lawmakers on this issue. They have a chance to let them know they consider ending cockfighting important—as is getting New Mexico off one of the lists of ill repute.”

Animal Protection of New Mexico Poll, 2001

81 % of Voters Support Statewide Cockfighting Ban

A January 2001 survey of New Mexico voters by Research and Polling, Inc. revealed that the vast majority of registered New Mexico voters are opposed to cockfighting and would support a law banning the practice in New Mexico. In fact, 81% of registered voters say they would support a law banning cockfighting, while only 11% oppose such a law.

  • 84 % Anglos
  • 76 % Hispanics
  • 77% on the east side
  • 83% in the south/southwest region
  • 80% in the northwest region
  • 80% in the north central region
  • 82% in the Albuquerque metro area
  • 80 % Republicans
  • 83 % Democrats
  • 72 % Independents/other party
