2004 Initiatives

Outreach and Education.

APV will publish its semi-annual newsletter, called The Political Animal, an Animal Protection Voters’ Guide, and a State/Federal Legislator Contact List.

APV will continue to host its comprehensive and informative website (www.apvnm.org) to educate the public and APV members about animal issues important to New Mexicans.

Legislation.

APV will continue to build support for the following bills to be introduced in the 2005 legislative session:

- a ban on cockfighting in New Mexico;

- creation of an Animal Sheltering Services Board with adequate funding;

- a law requiring the addition of a bittering agent to antifreeze sold in New Mexico;

- following the successful passage of a dissection memorial in the 2004 legislative session, a law requiring student choice in dissection across New Mexico.

APV will support other animal advocates in their pursuit of viable animal-friendly legislation.

Future Legislation.

Following the successful passage of a wildlife & habitat conservation memorial in the 2004 legislative session, APV will continue to develop support for a law that creates a statewide funding mechanism for conservation.

APV may explore other legislative initiatives in response to current events and opportunities.

Capacity-Building.

APV will:

- create and distribute a 2004 legislative session scorecard to all members, legislators and the media;

- send to APV members a customized report with legislative district-specific voting information, and encourage members to meet with their legislators on animal issues;

- organize and conduct legislative informational meetings around New Mexico;

- organize in-district meetings between targeted legislators and constituents;

- organize in-district media (letters to the editor and articles) regarding animal bills.

Election Work.

APV will:

- develop criteria for APV endorsements in local and statewide races;

- evaluate elections important to advancing animal issues;

- develop and issue candidate questionnaires for specific races;

- evaluate candidates for specific races;

- issue endorsements and organize volunteer help for animal-friendly candidates.

Legislative Recognition.

APV will sponsor an annual spring party/APV fundraiser to formally thank key supporters in the legislature.
